I recently was introduced to the guys at Viking Bags and they sent me over a tail bag for my new Honda CTX700N. They asked for my opinion on the bag and to evaluate it. Viking Bags provides motorcycle luggage to motorcyclists around the globe at a very affordable price.
The tail bag solved two of my problems at once.
- It added a great waterproof storage space immediately accessible for things like my shield cleaning solutions and rags, rain suits and visors.
- It’s shape is the perfect back support for those longer rides.
You may laugh but I was looking at purchasing a back support until I figured out that this tail bag does the job.
The tail bag is expandable and has separate zippered pockets. The best way to learn about this bag is to watch this little introduction movie and review that I made for the guys at Viking Bags.
I’m still riding my Vespa 250, but I hope you’ll permit me a couple comments.
I have used two different types of back rests. The first one was actually built into the saddle, with its armature firmly attached to the rigid saddle base. That back rest was great for rides that were on good pavement. However, when the Vespa would go over bumpy roads, the rigid back support would jab my back like a knife. After a few months, I gave up on it. Reluctantly, because I liked it for smooth pavements.
The second type of back support I have used is similar to the Viking bags, I think. It consisted of a soft luggage pack mounted in front of the rear top-trunk. That gentle back rest worked well on even the longest rides.
Presently I ride without any back support, and most of the time I’m not sure I need a back support, despite my 71 years. But on a multi-state tour planned for next month I’ll use the back rest mentioned in the previous paragraph, because I’ll have the luggage back mounted on the rear of the saddle in any event.
